He is the god of travelers to and through borders, of shepherds and cattlemen, of debates and spiritual tongues, of poetry and words, of sports, of weights and measures, of inventions and commerce, and of cunning thieves and deceivers. He is described in Homer's Odes as a shifty, sleek and resourceful thief who brings dreams, is the watcher of the night, the thief at the gate, and the first to show goodwill among the gods of immortality." Hermes invented the drilling of wood for fire, and he also invented the lyra, a musical instrument. Hermes was also the inventor of various athletic competitions and boxing, and thus became the protector of athletes. Hermes was also the god of the dead, helping dead souls to reach the underworld. In many Greek myths, Hermes is the only god besides Hades and Persephone who can enter and leave the underworld freely. Hermes is represented by a rooster and a tortoise, wearing a purse or wallet, winged sandals, a winged hat, and a messenger's scepter, also known as the winged scepter of the double-coiled serpent.
