The wolf (scientific name: Canis lupus), or gray wolf, is a species of mammal in the family Canidae, biologically the same as the dog, and the largest of the extant canids. Once the most widespread mammal on earth, including North America and Eurasia, the wolf is now extinct in Western Europe, Mexico and most of the United States. They inhabit mainly, but not exclusively, wilderness or remote areas. Their habitat has been reduced by one-third due to human aversion to reckless hunting of livestock, fear of attack by wolves, and extensive habitat destruction.
