This 1 Oz Silver coin is dedicated to the hippopotamus, often considered to be the second largest land animal (after the elephant).
Despite its stocky shape and short legs, it races up to 30 km/h (19 mph) over short distances.

The reverse of the coin depicts a top view of three hippos crossing a swamp, one of them carrying a large piece of wood. The swamp is colored and presents some plants and dirt. On the left, the inscription: “HIPPOS” – the name of the coin.
On the obverse the of the coin, the same scene but seen from under the water: two hippos are swimming, whereas another one is carrying a piece of wood in its jaws. On the left side of the obverse, the Coat of Arms of Palau and the inscriptions: “REPUBLIC OF PALAU” – the country of issue and “5$” – the face value.
